Program Overview
Obesity may be the single most influential factor for developing glucose intolerance – the hallmark of diabetes. Proper nutrition and weight
loss are considered cornerstones of therapy in managing type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 or adult-onset diabetes does not normally come on like a lightning bolt or an earthquake, but silently develops over years1. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, type 2 diabetes affects more than 25.8 million people, while an additional 54 million people are pre-diabetic. It is expected that one in four people born in the United States after the year 2000 will develop diabetes during their lifetime.
Many studies have shown maximal decreases in blood glucose within 10 to 14 days of initiating a Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD.) This
rapid response can be motivating to the person with type 2 diabetes because the symptoms of elevated blood glucose levels (e.g.,
polyuria, polydipsia, and fatigue) may be reduced or eliminated, along with reducing or eliminating the need for medications to
control blood pressure, blood glucose, and blood lipid levels. Thus, a VLCD approach to diet and weight loss may eliminate the need
to start or continue oral medications or insulin.
