Modify Your Recipes with Healthy Alternatives

With just a few changes; you can reduce the fat, calorie and sodium content of many dishes. Try some of these tips:

  • Eliminate frying

Dip skinned pieces of meat in skim milk or yogurt; roll in seasoned crumbs; bake at 350° on a cookie sheet sprayed with fat-free vegetable oil cooking spray.
  • Replace calorie laden ingredients with alternatives

If your meatloaf recipe calls for 2 pounds of ground chuck, use ground turkey for half the amount.

With dessert items, your sweet tooth can be satisfied with less fat and sugar than what is called for in a recipe. Try one of these tips when you prepare your favorite desserts.

  • Reduce sugar and fat...

by 1/2 to 1/3 in recipes for cookies, muffins, pies and pudding. Add sweet tasting spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice) and intense flavorings (vanilla, rum, almond) to enhance sweetness without adding calories.
  • Substitute oil and sugar with...

mashed ripe bananas, raisins, dates, canned pumpkin or unsweetened applesauce.
